Very nice heartfelt piece Rosh, as I read through,it sounded so much like the norm from this day and age, from the conversation of friends. Although still at a community newspaper, haven't had quite the same experience, but times are surley changing! Thanks for the words.

It's amazing how the newspaper industry has regularly downgraded the quality of their products and wondered why they are loosing influence. Is it too late for them?

The Arizona Republic, or "Repulsive" as many of us call it here, laid off their photographers. Now, reporters must also take photos. In a market that continues to grow, their readership goes down 3 percent or more each year. The mainline newspapers always talk in terms of their costs going up to explain everything. Now I was a reporter in the past, so I know the business. None of them ever mentions the CONTENT of the newspaper. Maybe that is why people don't buy any longer? Hmmmm, think about that. The other test is, are there other newspapers that have strong circulation? Why is that? What are they doing differently?

This was a particularly interesting post for me as I know the newspaper you're talking about in this post. I grew up reading it. I even had a few freelance assignments from them nearly 2 years ago...and wrote for another newspaper in the same town for a decade.
I really never met your chief photographer, although he seemed like a great guy when I saw him around town...and according to those who knew him well. It was a sad story when he left the paper, then died so shortly afterward.
The weekly I worked for went through a similar trajectory...started out owned by an individual, then a couple of buyouts later, it is much in the same situation as your old daily. I get together with my some of colleagues from there once in a while. Some are coping with the changes better than others.
Meanwhile, as a long-time newspaper reader, it breaks my heart to see how local news coverage has suffered throughout these changes. The Web sites for the locals...and even the large Detroit papers...are laughable at best. I don't want to tell you what Tim had to say when he started looking for some sports scores on the local online sites the other day. They've yet to adapt to the new media and make it valuable for readers.

Well, at least your buddy's little camera has a good home now :)

Great post! Thanks for sharing!

In my community, we lost the rocky mountain news, one of our main 2. The other is trying to hang on. I do see some of our smaller, more targeted print papers do fairly well.
Granted they're very targeted for the local music scene for example or outdoor living etc. Is that the same in other communities?

Excellent post.

As an optimist and someone relatively new to the newspaper industry, it is interesting to read of 'days gone by'...

...however bad the world and industry fall, I always try and keep myself up by the fact that media content will ALWAYS be needed, be it stills, video or a mixture.

Keep your heads up and keep taking pictures - its what keeps us sane, isn't it?

Kind Regards,

Matt Kirwan

Thanks for the comment.

I'm sorry to hear about you being laid off again, but, unfortunately, it is a common story. Below is a direct link for people to view your site.

kia ora mate (that's hello in maori) just caught your latest, what an insightful blog, i too have just be made redundent ( don't they love that word now they are calling it Extraneous to Needs) at a new newspaper that started down here in Dunedin, New Zealand, it was a bit of a shock but as this is the third time i have been laid off as Extraneous to needs i am coping with it well, i started an online magazine called insidephoto.info to try and help local photographers grow and develop as photographers. keep up the good work and i'll keep on learning more about the business from the freelancer end of the scale.
