Every once in a while I receive an e-mail from a subscriber pointing out an error I made in a post.  Sometimes it’s a spelling mistake or fundamental disagreement with my logic.

No one likes to make mistakes. But, having people point them out often makes you feel worse. Unfortunately, it’s part of life.

One subscriber of mine is Lucian; over time he has pointed out numerous errors.  Most recently he noticed I referred to my former supervisor as the “chef photographer.”  While the man was a fine cook, chief photographer was the correct job title.

It’s a darn good thing he pointed it out, because two hours later the post was picked up by a very large blog and the traffic was heavy.  That quick e-mail saved a little embarrassment.

Everyone needs a Lucian.  Sometimes that person is a family member, friend or co-worker.  They are on your case and damn it they’re often right. But, these critics are the people who make you better.

Lucian does more than point out errors.  He comments on ideas and shares his point of view.  He doesn’t catch everything, but it doesn’t matter.  I know he and his fellow proofreaders are out there.  That knowledge is what keeps me at my best.  And when I get lazy, I pay the price.

Don’t get mad, angry, upset or hateful toward these people in your life.  Thank them.  They make you better.  The Lucians in your life help you succeed.
